What to Expect During a Balance & Dizziness Evaluation

At East Coast Audiology & Physical Therapy, our balance and dizziness evaluations are designed to help identify the cause of symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness, imbalance, motion sensitivity, or unsteadiness. Because balance issues can involve both the inner ear and the body’s balance system, our audiologists and physical therapists work together to provide comprehensive care.

1. Conversation & Medical History

Your appointment begins with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and when your dizziness or balance issues occur. We’ll talk about triggers, frequency, falls, motion sensitivity, hearing changes, and how symptoms are affecting your daily life.

2. Comprehensive Vestibular & Balance Testing

Our audiologists may perform specialized vestibular testing, including Videonystagmography (VNG), to evaluate how the inner ear and balance system are functioning. Testing is designed to help identify possible vestibular or inner ear conditions contributing to dizziness or vertigo symptoms.

3. Immediate Results & Explanation

Once testing is complete, we’ll review your results with you and explain everything in clear, easy-to-understand terms. We’ll discuss what may be contributing to your symptoms and answer any questions you may have.

4. Personalized Recommendations & Treatment Plan

Based on your results, we’ll recommend the next best steps for your care. This may include:

  • Balance and vestibular rehabilitation therapy with one of our physical therapists

  • Home exercises to improve balance and reduce dizziness symptoms

  • Fall prevention strategies and safety recommendations

  • Additional medical follow-up or referrals if needed

  • Ongoing monitoring of symptoms and progress

5. Collaborative Care

Our audiologists and physical therapists work together to help patients improve balance, reduce dizziness symptoms, and feel more confident and steady in everyday activities.
