Possible Causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can have many different causes, which is why a professional evaluation is important. Common causes may include:

  • Hearing loss related to aging

  • Noise exposure or loud environments

  • Earwax buildup

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Certain medications

  • Ear infections or pressure issues

  • Jaw (TMJ) problems

  • Head or neck injuries

  • Balance or inner ear disorder

For many people, tinnitus is closely connected to hearing loss, even if they have not noticed difficulty hearing yet.

At East Coast Audiology & Physical Therapy, our audiologists perform comprehensive tinnitus and hearing evaluations to help identify possible contributing factors and create a personalized management plan.

What to Expect During a Tinnitus Evaluation

At East Coast Audiology & Physical Therapy, your tinnitus evaluation is thorough, supportive, and personalized to help you better understand the ringing, buzzing, or sounds you may be hearing.

1. Conversation

Your appointment begins with a one-on-one discussion with one of our audiologists. We take time to learn about your tinnitus symptoms, when they began, how often you notice them, and how they may be affecting your sleep, focus, stress levels, or daily life.

2. Ear Health Check
Your audiologist will examine your ears using a lighted instrument (otoscope) to check for anything that could contribute to tinnitus symptoms, such as wax buildup, irritation, or other ear-related concerns.

3. Comprehensive Hearing & Tinnitus Testing
You’ll complete a series of detailed, painless tests inside a soundproof booth to evaluate your hearing and better understand your tinnitus. Testing may include hearing evaluations, speech understanding testing, and tinnitus-specific assessments to help identify possible causes and determine how your tinnitus is affecting you.

4. Immediate Results & Explanation

Once testing is complete, we’ll review your results with you right away. Your audiologist will explain everything in clear, easy-to-understand terms so you understand your hearing health, possible tinnitus triggers, and what your results mean for everyday life.

5. Personalized Recommendations

If tinnitus or hearing loss is identified, we’ll walk you through personalized management options based on your needs and lifestyle. Recommendations may include:

  • Monitoring your hearing and tinnitus symptoms over time

  • Communication and sound strategies to reduce tinnitus awareness

  • A hearing aid consultation to discuss how hearing technology may help improve hearing clarity and reduce the perception of tinnitus.

  • Hearing technology or sound therapy options tailored to your lifestyle

  • Lifestyle recommendations and education to help manage symptoms

  • Referrals or additional testing if needed for further evaluation
